Bio

Steph Wall is an enigmatic alternative indie/soul singer hailing from Vancouver, B.C. Over the last ten years of her performing career, Wall has spent significant time studying under jazz vocalists in Vancouver and New Orleans. While still rooted in the jazz tradition, these days her music transcends genre boundaries, pulling inspiration from jazz heroes, Americana songwriters, and pop divas alike. Wall describes her latest release, My Angels, as “velvet alternative”- a blend of surf and soul with an Americana twang.

In My Angels, released independently on September 15, 2023,  Wall entwines intimate truths with universal struggles. The album is an exploration of human relationships, with themes of personal transformation, collective growth, and the knife edge between grief and joy. To quote a couple of guys that stumbled into Steph’s most recent show at Tyrant Studios from the strip club downstairs: “this is like therapy”.

Written by Wall, then collaboratively arranged with Allie O’Neill and Noah Franche-Nolan, the album’s creation reflected its themes of friendship and connection. “This album is about metamorphosis,” Steph declares. “It’s all about coming back to myself and listening to what matters.”

Wall uses her soul-stirring voice, reminiscent of Yebba, Kali Uchis, Amy Winehouse, and Jessica Pratt, like an instrument. Singing like a horn might play, Wall has developed a signature sound built around her distinct vocal timbre and stylings. Accompanied by a band that effortlessly dances between Shannon and the Clams-esque psych surf, Mac Demarco jangle, and the soul and grit of Amy Winehouse, Wall curates an instantly lovable sound that is entirely her own. After years of winning over audiences in Vancouver as well as on tour, and known for high-energy, quality performances that transport you into her world, Wall is becoming an indie household name in the city.

“Steph Wall defies categorization. With each single leading up to the September 15th release of her new album My Angels, we've been led down a different path in Wall's sprawling musical landscape. Surf, soul, pop, indie, country and jazz all fall squarely within her range. "Destroyer" feels like a diary entry, as stream-of-consciousness lyrics snowball into a catchy, up-tempo hook that'll play on repeat in your mind long after the song is over.”
